Pavers vs concrete, cost and lifespan
Poured concrete is cheaper on day one, at roughly $8 to $15 per square foot against $15 to $25 for pavers. Over the life of the surface on Woodland Hills soil, that gap closes and usually reverses. Here are the beliefs that lead people wrong, and what really happens.
Why this question lands differently here
Drive the post-war ranch tracts between Ventura Blvd and Vanowen and count the cracked driveways. It is not a workmanship story, it is a soil story. The valley floor under those neighborhoods is sedimentary clay and silt that swells when it takes on winter rain and shrinks when it dries out in summer. Anything rigid laid across ground that moves like that eventually has to relieve the stress, and in a slab that means a crack. Then head south of the boulevard into the Santa Monica Mountains foothills, where the lots tilt and drainage decides everything, and the calculation changes again. Concrete is the cheaper option.
What actually happens
True on the day of the pour and less true every year after. A plain poured slab runs about $8 to $15 per square foot locally, against $15 to $25 installed for pavers. But a slab on expansive clay is on a clock. Crack repair, resurfacing, or a full tear-out and repour are the only moves available, and a repour restarts the whole cost at current prices. A paver field gets maintained in pieces for a few hundred dollars at a time. Run both surfaces out twenty five years on the same Woodland Hills lot and the cheap option is rarely the one that was cheap in year one.

Pavers sink and shift. Concrete stays flat.
What actually happens
Backwards, at least on this soil. Pavers sink when somebody skipped the base, which is a workmanship failure rather than a material one. Concrete on clay does not stay flat either, it just fails in a different way: instead of settling gently it cracks, and the two sides of that crack rarely stay level. The important difference is what you can do next. A settled area of pavers gets lifted, the base corrected, and the same units reset. A cracked slab gets patched, and the patch never matches.

Stamped concrete gives you the paver look for less money.
What actually happens
It gives you a printed version of the look, and in this climate the print does not hold. Stamped concrete carries its color and texture in a thin surface layer protected by a sealer. Woodland Hills is where Pierce College recorded 121 degrees on September 6, 2020, the highest reading ever taken in Los Angeles County, and Santa Ana events bring long runs of dry, high UV weather on top of that. Under that exposure the sealer chalks and the color drifts toward grey, so the honest maintenance answer is resealing every few years forever. It also still cracks, because underneath the pattern it is a slab.

What actually happens
The routine is a broom, a hose a few times a year, and a bag of joint sand roughly every two years. Sealing is optional. That is genuinely the list. The idea that pavers are fussy usually comes from someone who saw a failed installation where the base was thin and weeds found the gaps, or from comparing against a concrete slab that got zero maintenance right up until the day it needed replacing.

A driveway needs concrete. Pavers are just for patios.
What actually happens
Interlocking concrete pavers are pressed from a dense, low water mix under high pressure and end up substantially stronger in compression than the ready mix in a residential slab. Herringbone laid at 45 degrees resists the twisting force of turning wheels better than any other pattern, which is exactly why it is the standard for vehicle surfaces. Municipal ports and bus lanes use interlocking pavers under loads no home driveway will ever see.

Weeds will take over the joints.
What actually happens
Weeds in paver joints germinate from seed that blows in and lands on top, not from anything growing up through the base. A properly filled joint, topped up when it settles, gives them very little to root into. The few that appear after winter rain pull out with two fingers. Compare that with the seam between a slab and a planting bed, which is a permanent weed line nobody ever solves.

Where concrete still wins
Being straight about it: if the budget is genuinely fixed and low, a plain slab covers more ground per dollar and there is no shame in that. A small utility pad behind a garage, a shed base, or a surface you fully expect to demolish in a few years when the house gets remodeled does not need pavers. Concrete also has a place where a perfectly seamless plane is the design intent. What it does not do well is sit on expansive clay for twenty five years and look the way it did at the start.
What this means on your actual lot
North of Ventura Blvd, on the flat ranch tracts and the one to two acre former walnut orchard parcels in Walnut Acres, the deciding factor is that clay. If you pour a slab there you are betting on ground that provably moves. Pavers over a base with a geotextile separation layer and a real drainage path are the surface that stops fighting the soil and starts working with it, which is why a paver driveway or patio on Woodland Hills soil tends to outlast the slab it replaced.
